Journey Through Time with “Serve it Forth!”: Medieval Recipes in the Making

Exciting news! The first draft of Serve it Forth!, my medieval cookbook inspired by the legendary The Forme of Cury, is officially complete. I’m thrilled to be in the recipe testing phase — the part where history meets the modern kitchen, and I can't wait to share this culinary adventure with you.

Reviving a Medieval Culinary Gem

For those who may not be familiar, The Forme of Cury is a 14th-century English cookbook, believed to have been compiled by the master cooks of King Richard II. This collection offers a glimpse into the rich and diverse food culture of the medieval era, featuring everything from hearty stews and roasts to fascinating sweet dishes flavored with exotic spices. With Serve it Forth!, my goal is to bring these forgotten recipes back to life for today’s cooks, balancing authenticity with accessibility.

First Draft: A Milestone Achieved

Completing the first draft was no small feat! It involved months of research, pouring over ancient texts, translating archaic ingredients and methods, and adapting them for modern kitchens. I’ve tried to retain the spirit of the original while making sure that today’s cooks can confidently recreate these historical dishes. Now, I’m diving into the fun and crucial recipe testing phase, where each dish is being meticulously prepared, tasted, and refined.

Recipe Testing: A Tasty Adventure

Recipe testing has been both a challenge and a joy. It's amazing to see how ingredients like saffron, almond milk, and verjuice transform simple ingredients into flavors that transport you back to medieval times. Testing these recipes has also been a humbling reminder of how different — and yet surprisingly similar — medieval culinary tastes were to ours.

Seeking the Right Publisher

Now that the manuscript is nearly polished, I'm shifting focus to finding the perfect publisher who shares my passion for bringing history to life through food. While self-publishing was an option, I believe that the right publisher will help elevate Serve it Forth! to reach a wider audience and truly honor the legacy of these medieval recipes.

Join Me on This Journey!

I’m excited to continue sharing this journey with you — from the ongoing recipe testing (and inevitable kitchen disasters) to the search for a publisher and everything in between. If you’re interested in following the progress of Serve it Forth!, I’ll be posting regular updates, sneak peeks of recipes, and behind-the-scenes moments. Who knows? You might even get a chance to test a recipe or two yourself!

Thank you for being part of this adventure with me. The road to publishing a cookbook is long and winding, but every step brings us closer to the table of King Richard II, tasting the delights that once graced a royal court. Stay tuned for more updates and, as always, serve it forth with love!
