Serv It Forth!: A Medieval Culinary Journey Continues

The time has finally arrived! After months of research, writing, and testing centuries-old recipes, I’m thrilled to announce that the first draft of my medieval cookbook, Serv It Forth!, has been completed and is now in the hands of editors and reviewers. The anticipation is real as I eagerly await their feedback, edits, and suggestions.

What is Serv It Forth!? Inspired by The Forme of Cury—one of the oldest known English cookbooks compiled by the master cooks of King Richard II—Serv It Forth! is my humble attempt to bring the flavors and culinary traditions of medieval times into modern kitchens. Each recipe has been carefully translated, adapted, and tested to fit today’s ingredients and tastes, all while staying true to the essence of these historic dishes.

The Process Behind the First Draft Writing Serv It Forth! has been an adventure. With The Forme of Cury as the foundation, I spent countless hours diving into medieval history, researching not only the recipes but also the culture, ingredients, and cooking techniques of the time. Translating these recipes from their archaic language into something more digestible (pun intended!) for modern cooks was no easy feat, but it was worth every moment.

Some highlights from this journey so far include:

  • Translating ancient recipes that called for ingredients like “verjuice” and “poudre douce” into equivalents we can easily find in stores today.

  • Testing each dish to ensure the flavors shine through for modern palates without losing the charm of medieval cooking.

  • Creating a balance between authenticity and accessibility, ensuring anyone—regardless of culinary expertise—can attempt these recipes.

What’s Next? Now that the first draft is out, the next phase begins. I’m working with a team of expert editors and reviewers, including historians and culinary professionals, to ensure Serv It Forth! is as historically accurate and enjoyable to cook from as possible. I’m excited (and a little nervous!) to receive their thoughts and suggestions for changes.

This process is essential to the book’s final quality. Medieval cooking can be a challenge to modernize without losing its authenticity, so having these experts weigh in is invaluable.

What to Expect from Serv It Forth!? Serv It Forth! isn’t just a cookbook—it’s a portal into the past. Each recipe will be accompanied by historical context, helping you understand the significance of certain ingredients and dishes during medieval times. You’ll learn what a noble feast might have included, as well as how common folk cooked in their homes. Alongside recipes, I’ve included tips on medieval cooking techniques, as well as fascinating tidbits about life in King Richard II’s kitchens.

In the coming weeks, as edits roll in and the final pieces of the book come together, I’ll keep you updated on the progress. Stay tuned for sneak peeks of recipes and some of the historical gems that made this project so exciting to work on.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in Serv It Forth!—I can’t wait to share this medieval culinary adventure with you!
